Deep groove ball bearings are the most popular of all ball bearing types because they are available in a wide variety of sealing, shield, and snap-ring arrangements. The bearing ring grooves are circular arcs made slightly larger than the ball radius.

The balls make point contact with the raceways (elliptical contact when loaded). The shoulders of the inner ring are of equal height (like the shoulders of the outer ring). Deep groove ball bearings can support radial, axial, or combined loads, and due to their simple design, this type of bearing can be manufactured to provide high running accuracy and high-speed operation. Standard ball retainers (cages) are made of pressed steel. Machined cages are used in very high-speed bearing operations or for large-diameter bearings.
